“I’m Not a Criminal Anymore”: Former Mob Enforcer-Turned-New Jersey Councilman Arrested in Extortion Case

Former mob enforcer-turned-New Jersey councilman John Alite is facing new extortion and misconduct charges after prosecutors accused him of running an illegal loan scheme and threatening debtors. Alite, who once claimed to have committed multiple murders during his years tied to organized crime, had publicly said he was no longer a criminal and wanted to serve his community.

A New Jersey council member who once openly admitted to a violent past as a mob enforcer is now facing a new criminal case.

John Alite, 63, a councilman in Englishtown, New Jersey, was arrested Friday and charged with multiple counts of extortion, corporate misconduct, and other offenses, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Prosecutors allege Alite made loans that exceeded the maximum legal interest rate and then threatened debtors with violence if they did not turn over money or property. Officials also claim Alite used his business, Straightened-Out Entertainment, Inc., to help carry out the alleged scheme.

For anyone familiar with Alite’s history, this case is especially attention-grabbing.

Alite is not just a local politician facing charges. He is a former organized crime figure who has publicly spoken for years about his time connected to the mob. An Albanian-American from Queens, Alite has been described as a former enforcer with ties to the Gambino crime family and the Gotti circle.

In a 2015 interview with CBS News, Alite spoke in chilling detail about his past, claiming he had committed 15 murders, shot 30 to 40 people, and beaten more than 100 others with pipes and baseball bats.

He also described one alleged organized hit in a way that shocked many who heard it.

According to Alite, he shot the man multiple times in the head, spit on him, and then went out afterward for a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke. He described it as if it were nothing.

That is part of what makes this new case so striking. Alite spent more than 14 years in prison in the United States and Brazil before later presenting himself as someone who had walked away from organized crime. After his release, he became a public figure in the true-crime and mob-story world, speaking about his past through interviews, books, documentaries, and his podcast, “Catch Me On The Run.”

He had also attempted to frame his later life as a redemption story.

In May 2025, Englishtown Mayor Daniel Francisco appointed Alite to the borough council. Around that time, Alite told The Guardian that he wanted to serve the community after the death of his daughter from a fentanyl overdose.

He also made a statement that now carries a very different weight in light of the new allegations.

“I’m not a criminal any more,” Alite said at the time. “I’m on a mission to do things the right way.”

Now, prosecutors are accusing him of doing the opposite.

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said the arrests came after “rigorous investigative work” and cooperation between the Division of Criminal Justice and New Jersey State Police.

“Our office is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses conduct themselves fairly and lawfully,” Davenport said. “The conduct alleged in this case was anything but, and we will work to hold those who cheat and steal accountable.”

It is important to note that the charges against Alite are allegations at this stage. He has not been convicted in this new case.

Still, the arrest has already raised major questions about second chances, public office, and whether someone with Alite’s past should have been appointed to a local government position in the first place.

That may be the part of this story that gets people talking the most.

Should a person with a violent organized crime history be allowed to rebuild their life and serve in public office if they claim to have changed? Or should certain pasts automatically disqualify someone from holding a position of public trust?

What do you think?
