Nineteen-year-old Marly Kinney vanished from a rented pontoon boat on Grayson Lake while out with at least 10 friends, authorities said. A Kentucky family’s desperate search for 19-year-old Marly Kinney ended in heartbreak after her body was recovered from Grayson Lake days after she vanished during a boating trip with friends.

Kinney, who was from Ashland, had been on a rented pontoon boat Wednesday afternoon with at least 10 friends when investigators say she went overboard to use the bathroom. According to authorities, the group did not immediately realize she was missing.

That detail has left many people asking the same difficult question: how does a young woman disappear from a boat full of friends without anyone noticing right away?

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources said Kinney’s body was recovered from Grayson Lake around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, five days after she was last seen.

She had last been seen around 4 p.m. Wednesday wearing a pink, orange, and white bikini.

A Massive Search on Grayson Lake

Once Kinney was reported missing, multiple agencies joined the search across Grayson Lake in Carter County.

Search teams used sonar, thermal detectors, helicopters, K-9 teams, heat-seeking technology, and underwater drones. More than 50 volunteers also helped, even as scattered rain made the search more difficult.

For days, Marly’s family held onto hope that she would be found and brought home.

In a statement during the search, her family thanked law enforcement, search and rescue crews, first responders, and community volunteers for showing up in such overwhelming numbers.

“We do not even know how to express our absolute gratitude to you all,” the family said. “We continue to have faith she will be found and brought back to us. We know we have the very best people doing all they can to bring her home.”

Sadly, the search ended with the discovery no family ever wants to face.

Kinney’s family has been notified, and the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort is expected to determine her cause of death.

Boat Driver Arrested for BUI

The investigation also led to an arrest.

Authorities said the pontoon boat’s driver, 23-year-old Cameron P. Conley, was taken into custody for boating under the influence after Kentucky State Police responded to the call for help Wednesday.

According to reports, a trooper smelled alcohol while speaking with Conley and noticed that his eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy. Conley reportedly failed a breathalyzer test and was taken to the Carter County Detention Center.

At this time, officials have not said whether Conley’s alleged impairment played any role in Kinney’s disappearance or death. The case remains under investigation.

That part matters because there are still many unanswered questions.

What exactly happened before Kinney went overboard? How long was she missing before anyone realized it? Were safety measures in place on the boat? And could this tragedy have been prevented?

Remembering Marly Kinney

As investigators continue working to determine what happened, those who knew Kinney are mourning a young woman they say was loved by many.

Smokin’ J’s Rib and Brewhouse in Ashland, where Kinney worked, announced it would close for two days so her co-workers could grieve.

“The Smokin’ J’s Family is saddened by the loss of one of our own, Marly Kinney,” the restaurant wrote in a Facebook post.

The restaurant described her as a model employee who was loved by her co-workers and friends.

“Always with a friendly smile and a kind word,” the statement said.

Many of those friends and co-workers had been volunteering in the search before Kinney was found.

That is the part that makes this case even more painful. Marly was not just a missing person in a headline. She was a daughter, friend, co-worker, and young woman whose life ended far too soon.

The Investigation Is Not Over

Authorities say the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about Kinney’s disappearance is being asked to contact Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement at 800-25-ALERT, which is 800-252-5378, or Kentucky State Police Post 14 at 606-928-6421.

For now, her family is left with grief, and the community is left with questions.

A day on the lake with friends should have ended with everyone going home safely. Instead, it became a five-day search and a tragedy that has shaken everyone who followed the case.

What do you think needs to be asked in this investigation? Should there be stricter rules around drinking, boat safety, and accountability when groups are out on the water?
