Postal Worker Mom Killed on Her Route Had a Troubled Past. Now Her Two Daughters Are Orphans

Brandi Reynolds, a 35-year-old North Carolina postal worker and mother of two, was kidnapped and shot dead while working her mail route in Hays. Court records show Reynolds and her late husband had prior drug convictions, but investigators have not confirmed a motive in her killing as her two daughters are now left without either parent.

A North Carolina postal worker was kidnapped and murdered while working her mail route, leaving behind two daughters who had already lost their father just months earlier.

Brandi Reynolds, 35, was killed Friday in Hays, North Carolina, a rural community about 160 miles west of Raleigh. According to authorities, Reynolds was working her route when a witness reported seeing an armed man in a gray Nissan Altima threatening her.

The witness then heard multiple gunshots.

By the time deputies arrived, Reynolds was dead.

Police say she had been restrained before she was shot.

The man accused in her kidnapping and murder is 56-year-old William Craig Durham. He was taken into custody and is now facing charges in connection with Reynolds’ death.

The killing is shocking on its own, but the case has drawn even more attention because of Reynolds’ past and the recent death of her husband, Brent Reynolds.

According to court records, Brandi and Brent were both convicted after being arrested in 2022 for drug-related offenses connected to their home in Wilkes County. Prosecutors alleged the couple used the home for storing and selling controlled substances, including marijuana and fentanyl.

Brandi was also charged with trafficking opium or heroin, as well as conspiring with her husband to sell marijuana. Court records state that police found drug paraphernalia, baggies, containers, plastic totes, and scales inside the home.

Both Brandi and Brent were eventually convicted.

Brandi was sentenced in May 2023 to 30 months of supervised probation. Brent received 36 months of supervised probation.

Then, just before Christmas last year, Brent died in a single-vehicle crash. Authorities said his 2014 Ram truck veered off the road, hit a tree, and overturned. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now, only months later, Brandi is also gone.

That leaves the couple’s two daughters without either parent.

And that is the part of this story that is impossible to ignore.

Whatever mistakes Brandi and Brent made in the past, two children are now living with the consequences of back-to-back tragedies they had no control over. Their father died in a crash. Their mother was allegedly kidnapped and murdered while doing her job.

Durham, the man accused of killing Brandi, has a long criminal history, according to reports. His prior convictions include assault, escaping jail, intimidating a witness, kidnapping, and robbery.

During Durham’s court appearance Monday, one of Brandi’s family members reportedly said he had threatened her and broken into her home before. Investigators have not confirmed whether Reynolds and Durham knew each other.

That leaves several major questions unanswered.

Was this a random attack on a postal worker? Was Brandi targeted because of something personal? Did her past have anything to do with what happened? Or was this the act of a violent repeat offender who should not have been in a position to hurt someone again?

Authorities have not released a confirmed motive.

For now, what is known is devastating enough: a mother was killed in broad daylight while working her route, a man with a violent criminal past is accused of the crime, and two young girls are now left without both parents.

Cases like this are complicated because they force readers to hold more than one truth at the same time. Brandi Reynolds had a criminal history. She was also a mother, a worker, and a person whose life ended violently. Her past does not make her death any less tragic, and it does not erase the grief her daughters now face.

What do you think investigators should focus on most in this case — Durham’s alleged prior contact with Brandi, his violent criminal history, or whether her past played any role in why she was targeted?
