A newly released 911 recording is revealing the frantic effort to save Hayden Panettiere after she was found unresponsive in a South Carolina rental apartment and the devastating moment a routine Sunday became a medical emergency.

The Heroes and Nashville actress died on August 16, 2026, at age 36. Now, audio made public on October 14 offers a clearer account of what happened as Zach Hickerson, the brother of her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, sought emergency help.

The recording captures panic, questions about whether Panettiere was breathing, and a dispatcher guiding the caller through CPR until first responders arrived.

Her death has since been ruled an accidental overdose. But the release of the Hayden Panettiere 911 call brings renewed attention to the emergency response, the coroner’s findings and the investigation that followed.

A Return From Church Ends With a Frantic Emergency Call

According to the account given during the call, Zach had returned from church when he discovered something was wrong at the Greenville apartment where Panettiere was temporarily staying.

Brian was also at the residence. The caller described his brother waking up while Panettiere remained unconscious.

As the dispatcher tried to establish her condition, Zach sounded distressed and uncertain about what to do.

“Oh god, oh my god,” he said.

The dispatcher asked whether Panettiere was breathing. Zach initially expressed uncertainty before confirming that she was not.

That exchange shifted the conversation immediately toward resuscitation.

The dispatcher asked about access to a defibrillator, but Zach could not locate one. The operator then began explaining how to perform CPR, giving him instructions while emergency personnel were on their way.

For readers following the Hayden Panettiere death investigation, the recording adds a direct account of the response inside the apartment. It does not, however, establish how the substances later identified in her system were obtained or consumed.

Dispatcher Guides CPR Until Help Arrives

The emergency call lasted approximately seven minutes, with the dispatcher guiding the caller through rescue efforts and counting chest compressions.

The audio captures an attempt to keep the response organized during an intensely frightening situation. Zach continued trying to help until first responders arrived and took over.

Emergency personnel carried out further resuscitation efforts, but Panettiere could not be revived.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m. local time on August 16.

The distinction between the call’s release date and the date of her death is important: this is newly available audio from the August emergency, rather than a new incident.

Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death: What the Coroner Found

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office determined that Panettiere died from the toxic effects of multiple substances.

The reported findings identified:

  1. Fentanyl
  2. 4-ANPP
  3. Methocarbamol
  4. Alprazolam
  5. Quetiapine

Her manner of death was classified as an accident.

An earlier autopsy announcement also stated that investigators found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death.

Those findings are central to understanding the case. A toxicology report identifying several substances does not, by itself, explain the circumstances surrounding each one or establish responsibility on the part of another person.

Likewise, an accidental manner-of-death ruling should not be rewritten as evidence of an intentional act.

The confirmed medical findings deserve more weight than speculation about what may have happened before the emergency call.

What Police Reported at the Apartment

A police report previously made public placed both Brian and Zach Hickerson at the scene.

According to that report, Brian directed officers to a bag containing medication Panettiere had been taking.

That detail has attracted attention, but the presence of medication is only one part of the investigation. It does not establish that everything detected in the toxicology findings came from that bag.

Additional reporting on the coroner’s records described two doses of Narcan being administered before emergency responders took over. Those records also described pills and other material recovered from the apartment, including items that tested positive for fentanyl.

These details expand the publicly available account of the scene. They still leave unanswered questions about the origin of the substances and the sequence of events before Panettiere was found unresponsive.

Why the Investigation Remains Important

Greenville police have continued investigating Panettiere’s death. Federal drug investigators have also joined the inquiry, according to reporting attributed to people familiar with the investigation.

An investigation is not the same thing as a criminal charge or a finding of guilt.

The emergency recording documents an attempt to obtain help. It should not be treated as proof that someone present caused Panettiere’s death, nor does it resolve every question investigators may be examining.

The most responsible way to follow this case is to separate three things: what the recording captures, what the medical findings establish and what remains under investigation.

At this stage, those categories should not be blurred simply because the case involves recognizable names.

She Had Spoken Openly About Addiction and Postpartum Depression

Long before her death, Panettiere had publicly discussed her struggles with opioids, alcohol and postpartum depression.

After welcoming daughter Kaya with then-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko in 2014, she spoke about how frightening and painful postpartum depression could be and how often women experiencing it felt misunderstood.

Her willingness to discuss those experiences helped put a public face on subjects that many families struggle to talk about.

She also spoke about the difficult decision surrounding Kaya’s care. Klitschko took full custody in 2018 while Panettiere was dealing with addiction and her health.

Panettiere described the separation as deeply painful and said she wanted to make the decision that would allow her daughter to be cared for.

Her history provides context for the challenges she had described publicly. It should not become a reason to reduce her life to those struggles or assume that every detail of her final days is already understood.

Coroner-related reporting also indicated that she had recently received rehabilitation treatment before her death.

A Family’s Loss Beyond the Headlines

Panettiere’s father, Skip, confirmed her death in a statement describing the love and joy she brought to her family and the people who watched her work.

He also asked for privacy as the family processed the loss.

For viewers, she was a familiar presence through Heroes, Nashville and films including I Love You, Beth Cooper. For her family, she was a daughter and a mother whose death left an absence no headline can fully capture.

The newly released 911 audio adds detail to the effort to save her. It does not change the human reality at the center of the story: a woman died at 36, emergency help could not revive her, and her loved ones are left grieving while investigators continue their work.
