A Gunman Crashed Into Their Lunch Break—Then a Citibank Security Guard Stopped Him

A woman was killed after a rifle-carrying gunman drove through a fence at a Citibank campus near Tampa. Video and witness accounts reveal the terror of the lunchtime attack, while investigators work to establish a motive and officials credit an armed security guard with preventing further violence.

An ordinary lunch break became a deadly emergency at a Citibank office campus near Tampa when a man drove through a fence, crashed into an outdoor dining area, and opened fire.

A woman was killed before an armed security guard confronted the gunman inside a cafeteria. The suspect was shot during that confrontation and later died at a hospital, authorities said.

The attack unfolded Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the Sabal Center complex in the Brandon area of Hillsborough County. More than 3,200 people were on campus.

For the workers caught inside, the emergency brought a terrifying uncertainty: where the gunman was, whether it was safe to leave, and whether their coworkers had escaped.

A Car Crash Followed by Gunfire

According to Chief Deputy Frank Losat, the suspect drove over medians and grass before breaching a fenced area and crashing among outdoor tables where people were eating lunch.

He then left the vehicle carrying a rifle and approached a woman, whom he shot, authorities said.

Reporting by WFTV described video appearing to show the suspect walking through the courtyard with a rifle and a handgun after leaving the car. Those images document part of the attack, but they do not establish why he chose the campus or the woman he killed.

That distinction matters. A disturbing clip can show someone’s movements without answering the questions investigators still have to resolve.

The Security Guard Who Confronted Him

The gunman continued into a cafeteria, where an armed Citibank security guard confronted him. Authorities said the two exchanged gunfire.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the guard shot the suspect. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital at 12:24 p.m. and pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m.

Officials credited the guard with stopping a threat that could have continued.

“Was there a potential for further violence? Absolutely,” Losat said during a news conference.

It is impossible to know precisely what would have happened next. What authorities have established is that the confrontation ended the gunman’s attack.

For me, that is one of the most consequential parts of this case: someone already working on the property encountered the attacker during the emergency and acted before more people could be harmed.

What Is Known About the Victims

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although early descriptions differed about her employment status, Citi CEO Jane Fraser identified her as a company employee in a message to staff, Reuters reported.

Her name had not been publicly released in the reporting reviewed for this article. Authorities also had not publicly identified the gunman.

Four other people were reported hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials initially said they had not determined whether those injuries resulted from gunfire, the vehicle crash, or other circumstances.

That means describing all four as shooting victims would go beyond the confirmed information. A fuller accounting of the injuries remains important as investigators reconstruct what happened.

Behind those unanswered details are a grieving family and people recovering from an attack at their workplace. Their experiences deserve as much attention as the footage of the gunman.

Deputies Arrived Within One Minute

The sheriff’s office said its dispatch center began receiving reports of shots fired at 12:11 p.m. The first marked unit arrived within one minute, and deputies immediately entered the building.

The response ultimately included 367 sheriff’s deputies and more than 400 law enforcement personnel across participating agencies. SWAT, aviation, drone, and K9 teams were among the units deployed.

The size of that response reflects the challenge of securing a campus containing thousands of people. Even after the suspect was down, responders needed to search buildings and locate workers sheltering inside.

CNN reported that sheriff’s office body-camera footage showed an officer moving across the campus toward the cafeteria. Other scenes showed employees leaving through crowded hallways with their hands raised.

The footage captures the response and evacuation. It cannot convey everything workers were experiencing while waiting to learn whether they were safe.

Workers Hid While Others Searched for Safety

A cafeteria employee told CNN she sheltered in a room with five other people. Some cried, while others tried to contact relatives or reach coworkers for information.

The Associated Press also reported that a nearby hotel became a refuge for fleeing employees.

At the Sheraton Tampa Brandon Hotel, staff took in approximately 300 workers, according to general manager Matt Chauvin. They offered water, food, and space for people to make calls or collect themselves.

That response is an important part of the story. Alongside the armed confrontation and police search, hotel employees were helping people who had suddenly found themselves running from their workplace.

Was the Attack Targeted?

Sheriff Chad Chronister initially said investigators believed the incident was targeted.

However, officials had not publicly established a motive or confirmed whether the gunman and the woman knew one another. ABC News reported that investigators were still examining those questions and cautioned that early information could change.

Chronister separately described the attacker as someone intent on harming as many people as possible.

Those statements should be attributed to authorities rather than treated as a completed explanation. Investigators still need to establish whom or what the suspect intended to target and what evidence supports that conclusion.

Citi Adds Security and Offers Support

Fraser told employees that the Tampa campus was secure and that additional security would be added at other locations as necessary, according to Reuters.

CNN also reported that counseling and other resources were being offered, and that employees were not expected to work Thursday.

That support matters beyond the immediate emergency. The end of an evacuation does not mean everyone who escaped can simply return to an ordinary workday.

The Questions Still Facing Investigators

The sheriff’s office is conducting a homicide investigation and has asked anyone with relevant video to submit it to investigators.

The unresolved issues include the suspect’s identity and motive, any connection to the woman killed or the campus, and the circumstances of the additional injuries.

I think the most useful discussion now centers on what the evidence can establish and what employers can learn from the response. The guard’s intervention deserves recognition, while the woman who died must remain central to the story.
